I knew that the Free Methodist Church in Taiwan was celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. I wrote a tribute to the church present and past. I knew that there would be a celebration. But, I had no idea how spectacular it would be. The tribal groups (Paiwan and Lukai) danced and sang. Holy Light Seminary had an impressive presentation. Choirs sang and videos brought tribute to the early missionaries and pioneers of the ministry. Their global impact became clear throughout the presentation as Asia has been broadly impacted by this group of 70 churches. More than 2,000 crowded into the college auditorium or the three hour event which was culminated in passing the torch, literally, to all of the leadership for the coming generations.
It was a heart warming and inspiring celebration of God’s faithfulness. And, that is what it was. It became apparent throughout the celebration that this was not about specific hero’s or sacrificial servants. It was about what God has done. In fact, there were only brief cameos of some of the biggest players in this drama. And, the present leadership played a secondary role.
What impressed me most was the fact that no one stood out, but God and his faithfulness. Sure, there were pictures of faithful servants; but no tributes, awards plaques, memorials or presentations for or by those who have been key players. It was not that they were ignored. In fact, I saw smiles on the faces of many in the seats who could have easily been center stage. The end result was an audience of eyes looking upward with gratitude in their hearts and what I believe was a suitable template for all such celebrations.
