On Waking, Walking and Retiring

There seem to be three parts to our day- waking, walking and sleeping.  The first part is getting started, setting the tone and mapping out the day.  Our attitude is set, our schedule is determined and our juices are flowing.  The second part is living it out, doing the deeds and accomplishing everything we have before us.  The third part is shutting down, reflecting, resting and allowing the busyness of the day to be a thing of the past.

The Lord must be in all of it.  It is common in Christian circles for people to speak of the first two- morning quiet time/devotions and praying and seeking God throughout the day.  A piece that is often missing is the Lord in the evening and night.  I can think of no greater time to draw near.  As we experience the dark of the night, it is a marvelous time to reflect upon the spiritual darkness from which we are saved.  As we remove our soiled clothing, it is a reminder of the need to surrender and confess everything that has soiled our hearts.  As we prepare for rest in our bed, it is a reminder of the rest we are able to enter because of Jesus.

Greet the Lord in the morning.  Live all day long for him.  Reflect, thank and confess in the evening.  Each day offers a microcosmic view of our whole lives and opportunity to live out our whole lives.  In the evening, don’t just mull over and review the day.  Surrender, reflect and allow God’s rest to be fully yours.
