For what do we need the power of God? We think of the grand miracle, obliteration of obstacles and enemies, strength to overcome mighty challenges. But, Ephesians 3:16 says, “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.” We have no greater need than inner strength to keep Christ dwelling (reigning) in our hearts- central of all concerns. We have no greater challenge than to stave off the old man/woman from taking up leadership within. We have no greater impediment to our faith than to take back the reins and control our own lives. We need the power of God for Christ to truly dwell in our inner beings in such a way that we respond to his leading, sense his presence and commit to be guided by his wisdom.
I have been fascinated through the years to ask people questions and listen to their hearts. One question I frequently ask, “What is your greatest challenge in life?” I have been amazed at how many people will mention external issues- my job, finances, difficult people, marriage, my children, etc. If those are truly the greatest challenges, then whenever a new external challenge raises its head with greater force, we will struggle equally with that one as we did the previous one. However, if we meet the greatest challenge head on: having all of the power of God focused on our transformation, then whatever external challenge arises, we have more than enough strength to meet it- with Christ dwelling/reigning in our hearts. That is why we are committed to asking him to set up residence and remain in charge. THAT is the greatest challenge.
