I heard someone in the elevator a few days ago speaking with a colleague about their work situation. The question was "How much can I take?" Sometimes we hear that put as a statement rather than a question, "I don’t know how much I can take." Similar expressions include: "I’ve about had it" and "I can’t take it anymore" as well as the ever-popular "I’m at the end of my rope."
In Christ there is no "end of the rope" or "end of the line" for that matter. In Christ, we do not have to worry about "how much we can take", since we can give it and surrender it to Him. In other words, we don’t have to take it. We can allow him to take it. Any affront or injury or taxing situation can be carried if it is Christ who carries it. The Holy Spirit is the supreme comforter. Christ is the ultimate burden bearer. Eternity is the final evidence. The peace and joy that come from being connected with Christ makes the scales weigh much lighter than they would without His unexplainable peace and joy.
I didn’t verbalize on the elevator. I didn’t want to be rude. However, I had an immediate intenal desire to say, "You can’t take much at all, neither can I. However, you will be amazed at how much God can take when we allow him to carry the burden. There’s no limit." If anyone reading this happens to be the person at "wits end" or "at the end of the rope", please know that there is much more rope and far greater wits than you or I have on our own. But, God is better than the perfect gentleman and will not impose his wit or rope or help upon us without our asking.
