I would like to think that I am a pretty good judge of character. I know mine quite well. I am well aware of my weaknesses and strengths- much more aware of my weaknesses. But, every now and then, someone behaves in a startling way. Someone we think about as nearly flawless behaves in a manner that disappoints. The opposite is true. I have seen people hardened by sin and selfishness behave with kindness and compassion that makes many Christians pale in comparison. But, for the most part, I am not often surprised.
I believe some of the reason, might have less to do with any gifting I might possess and more to do with experience. I have been plied by cons and schmoozed (sic) by the fawning enough to see insincerety when it is still a mile away. I have also been close enough, over time, to see people whose character is so influenced by the Holy Spirit that they are predictably holy in character, speech and tone.
And, here I am, traveling extensively in this new role. I meet people new to me, daily. I must say that I am wonderfully surprised. The people I am meeting, for the most part, Free Methodists, have shown a level of character that makes me delighted to be associated with the church. I’m sure that there are scoundrels or sluggards in every batch of people you stumble into. However, my stumbling has found none. I am thrilled with the level of compassion for the poor, generosity to the abused, love for the lost and neglected and genuine care for the family of God. Malachi spoke prophetically on behalf of God saying, "And you will again see the distinction bvetween the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not" (3:18). I have found the distinction stark.
The righteous part is more obvious. It seems that there is another category of folks, however, that is out there- those who are righteous and earnestly desire to serve God but do not know what to do or how to serve. For that group, I pray that you find someone to mentor you, explore with you, invest in you and help you find ways to serve. But, the onus is on you. There are many who are earnest, but have not moved very far in their service. Trust me! There are ample ways for you to serve. If you can’t find one through your pastor or spiritual advisor, then contact me. A spiritual army is comprised of more than just generals and commissioned officers. The enlisted are by far the greater number and the power behind the force. If God is calling you, find how to serve him within that call. Then you will be one of those who are distinguished as "those who serve God." Isn’t that a great title?
